The Santa Rosa Adopt-A-Spot litter cleanup program is ready to expand to the Navarre and Tiger Point areas.

The program originally focused on the Pace area, expanded to Milton and the north end of the county, and now has 52 businesses, groups, families and individuals sponsoring Adopt-A-Spot areas.

Participation from the south county community, including student groups, churches, civic organizations, families and businesses is encouraged. To receive an application, log on to www.srclean.org or call the Clean Community System at (850) 623-1930.

"The expansion to the south end will now let the entire county to be part of this very positive trend of the community taking responsibility and ownership of the place we live," said Elaine Sessions, Chair of the Santa Rosa Clean Community System Litter Committee.

The program is based on attacking what Keep America Beautiful has identifies as the three places that people tend to litter- where litter has already accumulated (the magnet effect), where people feel no sense of ownership and where people think someone is paid to clean-up after them.

"The Adopt-A-Spot program addresses all three of these areas," Sessions continues "and the difference between adopted areas and non-adopted areas becomes more noticeable as time passes."

The Adopt-A-Spot program is a joint effort between Santa Rosa County and the Santa Rosa Clean Community System. Inc.

The county provides signs and pick-up of collected litter with the Clean Community System administering the program.

Different from the Adopt-A-Highway program sponsored by the Florida Department of Transportation on State Highways, the efforts of the local program focuses on the community, county roads, parks, recycling sites and any other public areas.
