Gaming at my age?

Who would have thought that in my retirement years I would be spending quite a bit of time gaming…on the computer!

But as my Golden Years approach, I’ve come to appreciate that the world of virtual gaming isn’t just for youngsters. In fact, what I’ve discovered is that computer gaming offers a wealth of unexpected benefits for older people with the time and inclination to jump into the [keyboard] arena.

For example, I have been playing “World of Warcraft” on the computer, online with my daughter in Virginia. The rewards are immense to me. I have learned a lot of new skills and have spent several hours playing and relating with my daughter. Even though she is 16 hours away, we can chat and play a game together like we used to when she was little.

And there’s a lot to be said for hide and seek games for the computer. They sharpen my power of observation and keep my mind active. Doctors say using your mind more may prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

Since arthritis in my hands seems to be a problem at times, I also have taken up that game “Guitar Hero”.

Who would have thought that I could pretend to be a young rock and roll guitarist and keep my arthritis at bay!

There is also a bit more physical activity from the so called “dancing” around I do while playing.

These games may have been designed for the young, but the young at heart can benefit greatly from them also.

So next time you have an opportunity to try these ‘mindless’ kids’ games, keep in mind that trying them may slow down the aging process that all of us who are getting older hate to admit. Jump in and start turning the clocks back a few years on yourself!

You may have many more things to gain than lose, and who knows, you could end up being known as the “cool” grandma or grandpa!
